Umuada Igbo MIGL Launches First Charitable Volunteer Event

Help Us Save Lives: Breast Cancer Screening in Southeast Nigeria

On Sunday, August 31, 2025, Umuada Igbo Michigan & Great Lakes (MIGL) proudly held its first-ever charitable service event at the Crossroads of Michigan Soup Kitchen.

With unity, dedication, and compassion, our women and their children served over 500 guests with a hearty meal of Rice & Red Beans, paired with Peach Cups. In addition to meals, our association also presented a check to support the Soup Kitchen’s ongoing programs—a commitment to strengthening our community beyond the day’s event.

The day was filled with joy, laughter, and the spirit of service. From excited children to smiling mothers, everyone shared in the fulfillment of giving back.

This milestone marks the beginning of many more impactful initiatives. At Umuada Igbo MIGL, advocacy, service, and sisterhood are at the heart of who we are.

Here’s to many more opportunities to serve, uplift, and empower!

Breast cancer is the most common cancer affecting women in Nigeria—and the leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Yet, women in Nigeria are five times less likely to receive a mammogram compared to women in the United States. In Southeast Nigeria, the crisis is even more urgent. 70–80% of women are diagnosed at advanced stages, largely due to limited access to screening and treatment. Only 15% of women are ever screened, and the survival rate remains at just 45%. This means far too many women are losing their lives—not because breast cancer cannot be treated, but because it is detected too late.

Our Commitment to Change

Umuada Igbo Michigan & Great Lakes is committed to changing this reality. Reaching women in rural and underserved communities is critical. That is why we are partnering with Foundation for Cancer Care to support the purchase of a mobile mammography unit, bringing life-saving screening directly to women who otherwise would not have access. During Breast Cancer Awareness Month 2025, in collaboration with Association of Nigerian Physicians in the Americas, we launched a T-shirt fundraising campaign and proudly raised over $7,000 toward this initiative.

Beyond Screening: Real Support

We are committed not only to early detection but also to ensuring care continues: women requiring further testing will be supported, women diagnosed with breast cancer will receive assistance with treatment. No woman will be left behind.

What We Are Doing Now

We are expanding this effort by launching a Breast Cancer Screening Campaign across all seven Igbo-speaking states of Nigeria.

Goal: Screen 700 women in Southeast Nigeria Location: Owerri, Imo State Date: April 10–17, 2026 Partners: Foundation for Cancer Care & ANPA

This is more than a screening event—it is a full continuum of care.
